The hardware releases are just that - unless running on the Alpha for which the release was
made, you get the previous version (eg. install V4.0C from CD on Avanti you get V4.0B).
Its worth noting that V5.0 Steel, was always viewed a pre-release release, a kind of
customer field test version - but that didn't stop quite a few customers putting it into
production of one sort or another! V5.0A was deemed to be the first production quality
release.
Also, there were some cutomized releases, built for OEMs; V3.2G often formed the
base release for those.
